The City of Columbia, SC has an opening for a GIS technician position within the Clean Water 2020 (CW2020) program. CW2020 is a multi-year program designed to assess and upgrade its water and wastewater system. GIS system upgrades are a significant component of this effort and include mapping the system, standards development, and asset management support services. While the CW2020 program is a wastewater centric program, the GIS technician will initially and primarily be working to update and improve the City’s water network GIS.
The GIS technician will be exposed to state of the art GIS technology to include quality control techniques, web and mobile services (ArcGIS Online, Dashboards, etc.), industry best practice GIS automation and modeling techniques and engineering support services. The GIS technician will benefit and learn how to operate within a fast-paced environment designed to support the City’s utility engineering and maintenance departments.
GIS technician duties will include performing data quality checks on water pipe data (geometry and attributes), assisting in maintenance of the water GIS network, integrating survey and inspection data, creating presentation and report maps, and other related tasks in support of CW2020 analysis needs. Technicians will work under the guidance of CW2020's GIS Specialist.
Candidates should have a bachelor's degree with emphasis in GIS. Experience with Esri ArcGIS Desktop is required. Beneficial skills include: knowledge of geometric networks, Esri Data Reviewer extension, georeferencing and interpreting engineering drawings, databases (Microsoft Access, SQL Server, ArcGIS for Server and versioned editing), and cartographic principles. Additionally, GIS automation and scripting skills (python, model builder, etc.) are preferred but not required.
This is a long-term full-time entry-level position through a staffing agency. There is high potential for follow-on, full-time transition to the City of Columbia within 6 months. The position is located in the CW2020 office at 1441 Main St., Columbia, SC 20201. Start date is no later than January 22, 2018.
