REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of: GIS Intern in the Planning and Development Management Division.

This is a part-time position for 19 hours per week.
The hourly rate for this position is $15.06 per hour.

This is a part-time position in Broward County's Core GIS group. The position is open-ended and has the opportunity for advancement. The successful candidate should have the following experience: a general knowledge of GIS concepts, ability to respond to multiple tasks, ability to work independently in a professional environment, ability to manage files and large datasets, knowledge of metadata standards, proficient computing skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills.

Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Assist with GIS data development and/or conversion projects.
• Assist with the County's GIS implementation and maintenance activities, including maintenance of existing datasets, development of new datasets, preparation of maps and exhibits for meetings and update of cartography products for web distribution.
• Assign attribute data from other datasets to GIS format.
• Develop GIS layers/data elements.
• Develop and document GIS procedures.
• Develop and maintain metadata.
• Develop GIS desktop and web applications.

General Description
Performs support duties in an agency in order to gain knowledge, skills and professional experience.

Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures. Work is reviewed through observation of performance, frequent conferences and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Currently enrolled in, or graduated from, a degree-seeking program from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in a field relevant to area of assignment.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

None.

Preferences:

•Programming skills
•VB scripting
•.net (dot net) or html programming
•Experience with ArcGIS Online (AGOL)
•Experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
•Coursework in GIS and knowledge of GIS concepts.
•Experience with ESRI ArcGIS 10.1 or higher (10.4.1 preferred)
•Experience with relational databases (Oracle or MS SQL Server preferred).
•Working knowledge of cartographic principles and overall creativity with map design.
•Experience with providing cartographic products for inclusion in MS PowerPoint presentations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Applies research techniques and analytical methods to the study of administrative systems, organizational structures, policies and procedures related to the area of assignment.

Conducts special studies in conjunction with a project; analyzes data and makes recommendations based upon research.

Responsible for project assignments, research and analysis.

Provides information and assistance to the general public and other governmental agencies.

Prepares project reports and related data.

Provides administrative support to agency.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
