The Forest Service requires a cartographer at its Region 8 headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. This position will produce and maintain base series products, such as the Primary Base (FSTopo) and Secondary Base Series (SBS), and specialty maps to support a wide variety of program areas across the country. The contractor will be required to acquire new datasets from multiple locations, check for the correctness of the data, and then incorporate this data in production-quality maps. The position will be responsible for ensuring the logical consistency of the data, ensuring that all attributes are spelled correctly, and that symbologies and labels conform to Forest Service standards for the product being created.
Map production will need to ensure that final products conform to Forest Service standards, including proper placement of labels, proper marginalia with correct lat/lon grid, township, and range numbers along the neat line, and proper projection, datum and credits along the bottom border of the map sheet. Correctly-spelled legends, a quad index, and shaded relief are also required.
Candidate will have to work closely with the government contracting officer on creating a timeline of deliverables, including those that will require short turnaround times. Candidate must be able to complete government background check. Proficiency in ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and map publisher is required.
