Under general supervision, the GIS Technician is responsible for a variety of duties relating to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the supervision of interns. These duties include creating maps, performing complex spatial analysis, assisting with project methodology development and training documentation, assisting with the day-to-day training and supervision of interns and Research Assistants working in the Center for Geographical Studies, and performing Quality Assurance and Quality Control of work performed by interns and Research Assistants. Additionally, the GIS Technician will be working with hydro data on a regular basis. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of GIS concepts and an in-depth knowledge of ArcGIS 10.x.
Start date: Immediate
-BA/BS in Geography or related subject with concentration in GIS or GIS Certificate;
-Comprehensive understanding of fundamental concepts related to GIS (i.e. map projections, raster and vector data formats, topology, linear referencing, etc.).
-Demonstrable skills in spatial data creation, management and analysis;
-At least 1 year of related work experience;
-Experience supervising, training, and communicating with staff/interns;
-In-depth knowledge of ArcGIS 10.x and Microsoft Office Products (i.e. Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.);
-Attention to detail and a deep understanding of methods to ensure data integrity;
-Effective reporting and communication skills; and
-Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities and tasks.
-Solid understanding of hydro-related concepts and datasets;
-Proficiency in SQL, Python and other programming languages;
-Proficiency in spatial statistics;
-Familiarity with mobile GIS technology;
-Development and administration of web-based mapping applications;
-Fundamental understanding of relational database design concepts; and
-Experience working with large datasets.
