Transportation and GIS Analyst

Alta Planning + Design is seeking a transportation and GIS analyst to join our growing Data Science team in Northern California. Do you love using data to improve communities? Do you like thinking of creative new ways to analyze and manage data to evaluate transportation solutions? If so, this position is for you.

Position Priorities
The essential priorities of this position are to:

∑ Articulate, process, and present technical data in terms that are understandable to the public
∑ Estimating the demand for new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
∑ Identify hot-spot and systemic safety challenges for public and private sector clients in California and the U.S
∑ Evaluate the connectivity of active transportation network
∑ Produce data-driven, production-quality graphics
∑ Analyze and manage data to evaluate transportation solutions

Responsibilities + Tasks
Additional responsibilities as a traditional transportation planner:

∑ Development, editing and production of maps, newsletters, reports, and memos
∑ Data collection for public input, client meetings, displays, and reports
∑ Participating in and sometimes leading field investigations, site analyses, and public outreach

This position requires a combination of skills, experience and education including:
∑ Bachelorís degree in Planning, Geography, or a related field
∑ 2+ yearsí experience working in a consulting environment or public entity
∑ Knowledge of, and interest in, the field of active transportation
∑ A solid understanding of transportation-related datasets
∑ Ability to perform complex spatial analysis
∑ Proficiency in ArcGIS, QGIS, and Adobe Creative Suite
∑ Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, organization, and analytic skills.

Preferred Skills + Qualifications
∑ Masterís degree in Planning, Geography or a related field
∑ Proficiency in Python scripting in the ESRI environment (arcpy)
∑ Proficiency in Python scripting in an open-source GIS environment (e.g. geopandas, folium, etc.)
∑ Ability to query data in PostgreSQL databases using PostGIS spatial operations
∑ Experience in Web/front-end development (HTML, CSS, javascript)
∑ Experience building spatial analyses and models entirely in Python & SQL
